The Whitby Esk Energy – Ruswarp Hydro
a community-owned 50kW Archimedes screw hydroelectric turbine on the River Esk at Ruswarp, near Whitby, North Yorkshire
The scheme is run by volunteers through Esk Energy (Yorkshire) Limited, a registered society. Our main aim is to reduce the carbon footprint of the Esk Valley through generating renewable electricity. Learn – Share – Educate
Last week the turbine kiosk was installed. Like the local residents, the Directors of Esk Energy are concerned about the visual impact of the kiosk.
Plans were already in place to plant trees and shrubs once the contractor had finished. However, the Directors are aware that further work will need to be done to improve the view of the site. Therefore, they are actively exploring different options.
After a long wait the turbine has actually arrived on site.
Watch the arrival and lifting of the turbine into place.
Thanks to the Co-operative Enterprise Hub for their help with gaining wide press coverage.
The Archimedes screw turbine is expected to arrive on site about 9am on Tuesday 4th September.
Please come and join us watch the turbine being lowered into place during the morning, weather permitting.
We will gather on the pavement of The Carrs (B1410), on the opposite side of the river to the site – map.
Tea and coffee will be available in Ruswarp Village Hall during the morning.
