The Whitby Esk Energy – Ruswarp Hydro
a community-owned 50kW Archimedes screw hydroelectric turbine on the River Esk at Ruswarp, near Whitby, North Yorkshire
The scheme is run by volunteers through Esk Energy (Yorkshire) Limited, a registered society. Our main aim is to reduce the carbon footprint of the Esk Valley through generating renewable electricity.
Despite all the rain, work is progressing on site. Shame we aren’t in a position to generate yet!
Work is well underway on upgrading the fish pass. Weather permitting, it is due for completion the first week in July.
The Co-op North Yorkshire Area Committee visited the site on Wednesday 13th June to find out more about the project. Fortunately the rain held off and from the river bank opposite they were able to see the work that has started on upgrading the fish pass. We have received a lot of support from the Co-op nationally with setting up the company and marketing the share issue. Therefore, we were pleased to have the opportunity to discuss with the local committee members the difference the support has made to the running of the project.
